Deployment Outline:

In the immediate aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake in January 2010, comments from the aid agencies were that they had aid but had no communications to co-ordinate its distribution. In addition, due to the scale of the relief effort, with all agencies sharing the limited satellite resources, communications in and out of the country were very difficult.

SHADE was deployed with an engineer to a temporary Oxfam office facility, the Haiti Oxfam office in Port Au Prince was completely destroyed in the earthquake. We provided Internet, Telephones and a secure Virtual Private Network to Oxfam’s offices in Oxford providing vital Logistic and Administrative services which had previously been unavailable.

Mid way through the 2 month deployment SHADE was moved to the new permanent Oxfam offices to continue to provide services until normal terrestrial communications were restored. The engineer remained in Haiti for the duration of the deployment to provide support because of the high risk of further earthquakes and entering the hurricane season, all of which may have required the satellite antenna to be re-pointed.
